The fjords and mountains of the south
Like Argentina, Chile has the capacity for winterly conditions in the southern tip of the country, which extends down to 56 degrees of southerly latitude. A certain amount of winter sport is performed, too, but this is mainly confined to alpine skiing, and on all fields the Chileans are less active than their eastern neighbours. The country is not a member of the ISU, and no speedskating contests have been arranged inside it. There is however an active inline elite, and in January this year (2008), Alejandra Mates (who may or may not be identical to the author and journalist Alejandra Mates) set the first Chilean records in Salt Lake City. Times will show whatever this will lead to.
Statistics (November 2008):
Chilean records:
Alejandra Mates 58.38 Salt Lake City 26 Jan 2008
Alejandra Mates 1.56.84 Salt Lake City 26 Jan 2008
